Artists & Art Events
The Grand Opening of Grey Gallery & Lounge occurred up on Capitol Hill on January 25th at 8:00 p.m., (the private screening was held on January 10th.) Those attending were cool & diverse, the jazz trio’s music was smooth and funky, the champagne bubbly, the performance art interesting, the architecture awesome and the artwork was sublime. James S. Knight (a/k/a Jimmy Knight), is a prolific local artist who has been working in oils on canvas in earnest since 2003. I met Jimmy at a local coffee house in West Seattle where we also hope to see his first show this Fall. Knight was born in Anniston, Alabama but grew up in New Orleans where an incredible artistic and musical community exists and it had a profound influence on his life. However, the main influence on his life was his father, who told him many important things along the way but the one he remembers most is, “Never mind that the mule is blind, just load the wagon.” (For those of you who do not understand Southern colloquialisms, I sincerely apologize.) Artists who Knight admires and has been influenced by are Kandinsky, Miro, and Gorky to name a few.Knight attended University of New Orleans majoring in cartography and anthropology, but realized during an internship that sitting at a desk all day wasn’t for him. Later, Knight came West to the Washington area with the Navy and as a Merchant Marine Seaman. He has been around the world three times on a boat of one kind or another. He served our country during Viet Nam, Desert Storm/Shield and having learned a trade in the Navy has the “day job” of union electrician.
With regard to Knight’s art, it is clearly modern but is subtle and intricate. The pieces range from simple to complex, dark compilations to exceedingly light and airy. Each piece is a delicate balance of structure, composition and color which is indicative of his work. Knight calls them “doodles” but those of us who see them know they are original art. They are definitely not doodles.
I will post when James S. Knight’s art show is being hung so we can all come out and check out his work, and perhaps buy a piece or two. There is nothing out there quite like his work, which is why I’m bringing it to your attention.
